Cycling in Singapore
Yesterday I ventured for a long ride in Singapore.
My first impression, well, it wasn’t as easy as I expected for such a “well” planned city. Bike lanes or bike accesses are widely missing. With the high number of constructions here and there (the only thing constant in Singapore — construction sites), in multiple cases, it meant that any sign of passage was a mirage. The path forward meant alternating between sidewalks, crosswalks, pathways and here and there, some road segments.
Although possible, we don’t see bike lanes or many bikers using the streets and most that we do see default to the pedestrian areas. I guess the traffic speed and, in some cases, car density isn’t precisely comforting to anyone venturing directly into the road, helmet or no helmet.
Google bike directions were mostly useless with cases where it sent me to high-speed, car-only ramps and routes. Pedestrian directions were the only way forward indeed.
Nevertheless, one hour and forty-something minutes later, I confess that it was one of the best and more scenic bike trips I’ve done in the past years.
